Situated on a challenging corner site in North Perth, Dollhouse pushes the boundaries to make clever use of a small lot. The design was created to maximise the available space in the house in creative ways while still being complimentary to the surrounding houses and residents.
The result is a very comfortable home with a sense of light and space throughout. This has been achieved through the introduction of a two storey void in the heart of the home which has been glazed at the upper level and set-back a considerable distance off the boundary to let in valuable northern winter sunlight. This winter warmth is absorbed by the thermal mass of the concrete floors and block-work walls to create comfort through winter. In summer the same glazed openings on the north can be opened up to vent out any hot air that is built up, assisted by the air movement from openings on the southern and western sides of the home.
The spaces have been designed with multiple uses in mind, making for a flexible home for everyday use as well as being suitable for large gatherings, demonstrating that small homes can be sustainable without compromising function.
