Dating back to the days of European settlement upon the Swan River when water transport was the colony’s main method of travel Barrack Street Jetty was essential to Perth’s establishment.  Poor roads and limited railways meant people and cargo usually travelled by boat.  The Jetty was one of Perth’s busiest, later becoming the port’s general cargo jetty.  In 1881, the Fremantle to Guildford railway line and from the early 20th century, Barrack Street Jetty was mostly used for passenger travel.  Today it is an important tourism and recreation destination undergoing transformation as part of the Elizabeth Quay Project.
