Art Gallery of Western Australia
Founded in 1895, the Art Gallery of Western Australia comprises three heritage buildings within the Perth Cultural Centre.
Designed by architect Charles Sierakowski, the Gallery’s main building is of Modernist design utilising modular wall lengths of 7, 14 and 21 metres with 120 degree angles to stimulate peripheral vision. Inspired by the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, the Gallery affords vistas throughout the nine gallery spaces and has a cast concrete spiral staircase.
Originally opened on 2 October 1979, the main building façade was recently reclad to ensure the Brutalist architecture remained intact.
The ground floor and centenary galleries house the State Art Collection, and the upper floor is home to an exciting rotation of temporary exhibitions.
